This is one of my all-time favorite openings (and boy howdy, I had a hard time deciding when to stop). Sometimes the characters will hook the reader, sometimes the premise, sometimes it’s just knowing the author-but nothing beats a great opening for getting a reader to commit. Head & Shoulders used to tell us that, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” That’s true for wearing dark shirts, and it’s especially true for books.
